Berkeley student pushes to make garter snake state reptile

A Berkeley Middle School student made a case this week for why the Eastern garter snake should be the state's reptile in Richmond. 

Aiden Coleman, 11, presented his argument to the House of Delegates' General Law Committee Tuesday on HB35, which would make the common snake Virginia's reptile.

Virginia seems on its way to boasting an official state reptile, and snake lovers have an 11-year-old boy to thank for it.

Del. Brenda Pogge, R-James City County, let her young constituent Aiden Coleman do most of the talking Tuesday when the House of Delegates’ General Laws Committee took up her bill, HB335, bestowing the state’s official imprimatur on the Eastern garter snake.

After box turtle's failure, Virginia's official state reptile could soon be a snake

Twice, the Eastern box turtle came up short in its crawl toward designation as Virginia’s official state reptile.

This year, a creature of a different order will slither home with the prize if state Del. Brenda Pogge has her way.

She’s betting on two other long-revered symbols of Virginia’s natural beauty and the passion of an 11-year-old boy to help win the fight.

Pogge to Continue Work as Delegate for the 96th District

Del. Brenda Pogge will return to the Virginia House of Delegates to represent the 96th District after defeating challenger Brandon Waltrip in the general election, according to unofficial results.

Vote totals from the Virginia Department of Elections show Pogge, a Republican, leads the ballot count with 12,004 votes, or 61.08 percent, as of 10 p.m. Waltrip, an independent, has earned 7,600 votes, or 38.67 percent.
